Training and background

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisor who has over 30 years of experience in the behavioral health and medical field. I received my Bachelors of Social Work from Lamar University and my Masters of Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington. I have worked in community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs, integrated health programs, and also in private practice. I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults.

In the past I served on the Board of Directors for NASW, once for the Northeast area of Texas while living in Tyler and then when relocating to this area served for the Southeast Texas area. I also provide clinical supervision and consultation services to other social workers. I enjoy giving back to a profession that has been so rewarding to me.

Mental health counseling

I utilize a “whole person” approach in mental health counseling and think that it is important to focus on balance in our lives – where we live, work, and play and how our relationships are in these areas. Often, we lose sight of this, and it creates both mental and physical problems. I will work with you to identify those problematic areas and to develop better lifestyle habits and coping strategies.

Some of the most difficult times in our lives can be when we are facing changes. Moving, graduating, changing jobs, getting married or divorced, and experiencing health changes are just a few of the challenges that we face that can create stress and result in increased anxiety or depression. Each phase of our life brings about new stressors that we have not encountered before. We may experience stress with both happy events in our life along with those events that can be very painful. Mental health therapy can be very effective in assisting you in managing these stressors.

Life can be overwhelming at times, and we often feel as if we are all alone. We try to not let anyone know how we really feel as we often think that we will be judged and that others would not understand the emotions that we are experiencing. We often feel ashamed by feeling anger, depression, and anxiety and continue to hide this from others. Mental health counseling helps you not to be alone and to understand what is happening to you while often giving you a new perspective on the situations in your life. It also helps you to develop new ways to manage those areas that may be the most difficult for you.

I often say that I am fortunate to have found a career that I love as much now as I did when I first started over 30 years ago. I am passionate about working with others and am grateful that others choose to share their joys and sorrows with me. I get excited watching my clients grow and become more confident in their daily lives.

I utilize a variety of different therapeutic modalities including cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy and psychodynamic therapy. I also use many stress reduction techniques which focus on becoming more mindful, staying in the present, and learning different breathing techniques. Together, we find the best approach to work with you and your needs.

Who I am out of the office

When not in the office, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. My dog Cooper and I like to go for long walks on the beach, are always looking for new places to go, and enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of nature. I am an avid reader and rarely do I go anywhere without a book to read. I particularly like biographies and memoirs, mysteries, and thrillers.

I enjoy learning and am presently focused on learning more about the healing aspects of nature and also the mind/body connections. I like learning about the history of our communities and also focus on “useless trivia facts”. My goal for 2023 is to travel more and experience more of what life has to offer me.
