Why can't I just forget about it?
You want to let it go, but it just keeps popping back up.
You tell yourself over and over that you are ready to move on, but something triggers you, and it feels like it’s happening all over again.
Trauma experiences are different for every person.
We have an overpowering emotional reaction where our body is driven into fight or flight mode to protect us. Our brain remembers and records the feelings of that moment and translates it into unreasonable fears and behaviors that are unexplainable.
The air-filled balloon pops up.
You try to “stuff” your emotions down and pretend that you’re not bothered by things and try to act NORMAL, similar to stuffing an air-filled balloon underwater with your hand. You steady it and try and keep it contained.
You can do this for a short while...maybe even years if you are strong enough!
Eventually, your hand will get tired and up pops that balloon like with our emotions. They can pop up at the most inopportune times, right? What if the pain was gone for good?
Imagine what it would be like to be reminded of the trauma event, but you stopped reacting with emotions. It would be worth it to just feel free of the fears and experience true relaxation.
